Intellectual Property Rights

The purpose of this policy is to address the principles of ownership of works created by faculty, staff, and students.
In keeping with academic tradition and federal statue 17 U.S.C. Section 102, which assigns copyright, faculty (including full-time, part-time, and adjunct) of Blue Mountain Christian University retain ownership and control of instructional and scholarly works. These include but are not limited to textbooks, course materials, lecture notes, scholarly papers and articles, software and other computer programs, novels, poems, plays, painting, and musical compositions.
The University does claim ownership to works which are created by staff as part of their job responsibilities. The University would not own scholarly or artistic works which are created by a staff members on their own initiative and outside the scope of their employment.
Students retain copyright and ownership of academic works (student projects, papers, etc.) which are created while at the University.
