English with Writing Emphasis, Bachelor of Arts

The major for the Bachelor of Arts program offers an emphasis in literature which requires 45 semester hours of study in English, or an emphasis in writing which requires 46 hours of study. The aim of the program is the development of competence in reading and writing skills, understanding of the history and development of the English language, and knowledge of the major writers, texts, trends, genres, and historical development of the British and American literary canons. The Bachelor of Arts degree, which also requires 12 hours in a foreign language and a minor field, is usually chosen by students who plan to attend graduate school or seminary or who desire to pursue careers as professional writers. The core courses taken by all degree candidates are directed toward developing the requisite skills in reading, writing, and cultural literacy needed by students, both English and non-English majors, to participate in the broader culture.
